Carnatic and Hindustani music, vocal and instrumental, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, taught across Dallas–Fort Worth.

A tanpura's four strings: the drone every concert is sung against. Run a finger across them, or listen.

I. Vocal

A concert begins with a single voice.

Carnatic and Hindustani vocal music is taught across DFW — from the first sarali varisai and alankar to full concert repertoire, in sa–ri–ga–ma.

Sa to upper Sa is one turn: the same note at twice the frequency, so the wave has twice the ripples. Tap a swara to hear it sung.
Sarali varisai 1 in rāga Māyāmāḷavagauḷa, Ādi tāḷa — the first exercise every Carnatic student learns, sung over the tanpura's drone as every lesson is. The lines are the seven swaras, spaced by their true pitch; move across the melody to follow it.

II. Dance

Rhythm you can see.

Studios across DFW teach classical dance — most of them Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, from the first adavus to the arangetram. Every step lands on the tāḷa.

Ādi tāḷa, kept by hand: a clap and three finger counts, then clap–wave, clap–wave. The feet strike alternately on the beat, as in tatta adavu, the first step a Bharatanatyam student learns.

Salangai

Rows of small brass bells sewn to a pad and tied around each ankle, so every footfall is heard. Move across them to shake them — and they ring on each beat when the tāḷa plays.

III. Instruments

Wood, gut, clay and skin.

The veena's carved body, the violin that came to Carnatic music two centuries ago, the mridangam and ghatam that keep the tāḷa. 16 schools in DFW teach an instrument.
